Fun With Drones

I recently became a proud owner of a DJI Mini 2 drone. I’ve been looking at these for a while now; ever since my brother-in-law brought one over a few times I fell in love with viewing the world from above. The drone has also renewed my previous love for photography.

Starting out was an adventure of itself. There are a lot of new laws and regulations which one has to follow in order to fly one of these. So off to the internet to learn about them all.

Things I learned:

  • I can’t fly over 400 feet in the air
  • I can’t take off from any parks or national memorials
  • I live next to the airport – so there are additional rules and height restrictions and I must file a request with an FAA every time I want to fly (thankfully, it’s easy and instant via a special app)
  • I can only fly for fun and can’t charge or use the drone for commercial purposes, unless I obtain a remote pilot license (which I may end up doing)
  • I can’t fly at night
  • If I add anything to the drone at all (light, etc) my drone will be over 250g and will be required to be registered with the FAA (drones under 250g do not have to be registered when flying for fun)
  • There are many other…

Even though one must follow all of the above, videos and photographs from above are simply awesome!
